This Urban Naturalist class will use the natural areas of OES, as well as the greater Portland area, to explore and learn about our local urban ecosystem and the plants and animals that live here. We will focus on learning how to make detailed and thoughtful observations of nature, while developing our skills as Naturalists through plant and animal identification, use of a dichotomous key, understanding ecological relationships, and journalling. Through observing, writing, and drawing about our experiences, we will learn to make personal connections with each place we visit and deepen our relationship to the land and our sense of identity. Students should be prepared to be outside most of the day in all weather conditions and hike up to 4 miles.
*Lunch will be provided for all morning and all day classes from 12pm-12:45pm. Lunch supervision will be provided for students PreK-8th grade. Bon Appetit manages the OES Dining Hall and specializes in fresh, local ingredients. Please see the Summer Lunch tab or oes.cafebonappetit.com for more information.
